The grant from the ABIM Foundation allowed the Washington Health Alliance (the Alliance) to amplify its efforts by leveraging the collective strengths of the organization and the Washington State Medical Association (WSMA).
The Alliance worked closely with WSMA to jointly sponsor an event in late 2013 to educate physician leaders about the campaign and to create momentum toward adoption of Choosing Wisely® recommendations. The meeting led to the formation of a Choosing Wisely Task Force, made up of 18 physician leaders from around the state.
The Alliance has created consumer materials, including rack cards and posters, for employers and has adapted the National Business Coalition on Health Choosing Wisely toolkit for its purchaser members.
As part of its patient experience survey, the Alliance distributed the rack card promoting Choosing Wisely to 83,000 patients across the state.
Over the next year the Alliance will work with several employers, and will also explore using claims data to measure the prevalence of certain tests and procedures included in the Choosing Wisely recommendations on which it’s focusing.
Results of the Alliance’s work include a radio interview on KOUW featuring Dr. John Santa from Consumer Reports entitled “Keeping A Lid On The Cost Of Health Care.”
The mission of the Washington Health Alliance (formerly the Puget Sound Health Alliance) is to bring together those who give, get and pay for health care to create a high-quality, affordable system for the people of Washington state. The Alliance is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that shares the most reliable data to help providers, patients, employers and union trusts make better decisions about health care quality and value.
