The Wisconsin Collaborative for Healthcare Quality (WCHQ), a regional healthcare collaborative and past ABIM Foundation grantee in advancing Choosing Wisely, will lead an effort to reduce the utilization of antibiotics for viral infections in adults, imaging for low back pain, imaging for headaches and inpatient blood utilization. It will partner in this effort with provider organizations Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, Monroe Clinic, the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians and the Wisconsin Medical Society.
Planned clinical interventions include implementing standardized staff-assisted workflows and decision support tools and sharing monthly, unblinded individual provider and group reports of utilization. The provider partners also plan significant patient education efforts, relying on materials produced by Consumer Reports. To expand awareness of Choosing Wisely more broadly across the state, WCHQ will lead efforts to promote the campaign through press releases and online campaigns, distribute campaign messages and materials to purchasers and payers, and host a statewide event for 100-150 representatives from health care provider, purchaser, payer, consumer and other stakeholder organizations.
