The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) is pleased to partner with Choosing Wisely to promote evidence-based care practices to consumers and providers. Historically midwives have been known for their superb outcomes and cost effective care, largely due to their respect for the physiologic nature of women’s life cycle events and focus on psychosocial components of care. Midwives are uniquely positioned to positively influence women’s healthcare practices due to their expertise in normalcy and the value they place on shared decision making and individualized, evidence-based care practices. Midwifery services include primary care; gynecologic and family planning services; preconception care; care during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period; care of the normal newborn during the first 28 days of life; and treatment of male partners for sexually transmitted infections. ACNM leads the nation’s largest midwifery quality improvement efforts and strongly supports the aims of Choosing Wisely.
As the professional organization for certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and certified midwives (CMs) in the United States, ACNM sets the standard for excellence in midwifery education and practice in the United States and strengthens the capacity of midwives in developing countries. With roots dating back to 1929, ACNM is the oldest women’s health care organization in the United States. ACNM creates standards for midwifery, provides professional resources for practicing CNMs and CMs, reviews research, administers and promotes continuing education programs, and works with organizations, state and federal agencies, and members of Congress to advance the well-being of women and infants through the practice of midwifery. ACNM’s core values are: Excellence; Formal Education; Inclusiveness; Woman-Centered Care and Respect for Physiologic Processes; Primary Care; Partnership; Advocacy; and Global Outreach.
