American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine

The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) applied for a grant from the ABIM Foundation to increase the reach of its Choosing Wisely list of Five Things Physicians and Patients Should Question in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. This work incorporated multi-modal messaging, including op-eds, educational presentations (in-person, webinar and recorded), social media outreach and research.

Results of AAHPM’s work included:

  • Educating more than 200 participants via webinar on AAHPM’s “Five Things” list; the recording is available free of charge in AAHPM’s book store.
  • Hosting an educational session at the Annual Assembly to give the leader trainers the opportunity to educate participants about AAHPM’s “Five Things,” explain the rationale behind each of them, and train attendees to conduct similar educational sessions at local, state, regional or national meetings.
  • Disseminating messages through AAHPM’s Twitter and Facebook social networks.

The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine’s mission is to expand access of patients and families to high-quality palliative care and advance the discipline of hospice and palliative medicine through professional education and training, development of a specialty workforce, support for clinical practice standards, research and public policy advocacy.
