Case Study: Greenville Memorial Hospital – Prisma Health
Greenville Memorial Hospital is a 746-bed hospital in Greenville, South Carolina; it is the flagship hospital of Prisma Health-Upstate. As an academic medical center, it primarily serves a safety net population and the largely rural area known as “Upstate” in South Carolina.
Problem
Hospital leaders were interested in reducing the use of high-cost items in OB/GYN. They assessed physician knowledge of costs associated with common OB/GYN products, tests and services, and found that physicians underestimated the cost of many common services.
Solution
The project leaders launched an intervention that included cost awareness education at grand rounds and changes to the ordering system that discouraged ordering more costly treatments when effective and less expensive alternatives were available.
