Choosing Wisely and Patient Engagement

Engaging patients in care and care redesign takes strategy, evidence, and enthusiasm. There are additional considerations when engaging patients in reducing unnecessary care, including fear of lack of access to services and a pervasive belief that more care results in better health outcomes. The US is not alone in this challenge. Through international collaboration, Choosing Wisely campaigns around the world have identified a framework to involve patients in reducing overuse.

We have created a technical assistance package that aims to provide insights and tools to implement patient engagement around overuse in your organization. Each section is broken into three categories: (1) 5 key takeaways; (2) tools and resources you can learn about in 20 minutes or less; and (3) tools and resources that may take about an hour to use.

You can find the toolkit here.
