Pharmacist Group Joins Choosing Wisely

On May 2, ASHP (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists) announced its partnership in the Choosing Wisely® campaign, becoming the first pharmacy organization to participate in the national effort to reduce overuse and waste in the U.S. health care system.
A national professional organization, ASHP’s over 43,000 members include pharmacists, student pharmacists and pharmacy technicians serving as patient care providers on health care teams in acute and ambulatory settings.
As a partner in the Choosing Wisely campaign, ASHP will develop and release an evidence-based list of medications or treatments that may be overused or inappropriate to promote clinician and patient conversations. ASHP will also work with Consumer Reports to develop patient resources to support the campaign.
“The Choosing Wisely campaign aligns with ASHP’s vision of ensuring that medication use will be optimal, safe and effective for all people all of the time,” said ASHP CEO Paul W. Abramowitz, PharmD, ScD. (Hon.), FASHP. “ASHP is pleased to join Choosing Wisely, and we look forward to contributing the expertise of our members to advance the campaign’s goals.”
